Frozen: In time

30/01/08  ||  Lord K Philipson

It’s clear to me… the end of possibly ok band names is definitely coming closer. Now let’s rip off Obituary’s “Frozen in time” (or was it “Frozen in shit”?) album and use it for both the band and the album title. Im-fucken-pressive. Let’s just hope there’s more to the music than what one would initially think. And we are lucky, what Frozen are doing isn’t even close to as fucken worthless as their name.

What we are dealing with is some alright metal ranging from being influenced by bands such as later Death, some modern black metal, some modern death metal and any Swedish melodic band from Gothenburg. One thing that’s not really working though, and I have said this before, is the fact that Frozen uses semi-blasts or blasts over too melodic riffs. It never worked in the past and it sure won’t work now. Blasts crave some brutality coming from the axes and bass to enter full effect, using In Flame-ish guitars combined with blasts is kinda as awesome as… ehum… well, it’s not.

There’s no denying that Frozen can handle their instruments well and create good metal, but I’m not blown away. They sound all fine and the production is good, it’s just not anything remotely special though the technicality shines through at times and they sure deliver here and there.

6,5/10.
